Getting Started
You can use all the materials directly from the CD - but if you wish to make changes, you will need to transfer the files to your computer hard drive. They will also run more smoothly from a hard drive.
1. Open up the Script - print it or work on screen. The plain text is intended to be the script you deliver, the notes in brackets and italics are instructions for the trainer’s information only.
- Cross out any paragraphs that consider not applicable (do not remove until you have looked at the PowerPoint – otherwise there is a danger that the numbered paragraphs and slides will not match.)
- Add paragraphs for additional items you wish to include (but do not number at this stage). Consider local sensitivities such as nearby water course, materials in use and stored on your site, situations where there is an increased risk of spillage, location of spill kits, waste disposal procedures etc.
- Complete the sections with italics notes (e.g. regulators for your site).

2. Open up the PowerPoint presentation
- Remove the numbered slides that correspond with the numbers in the script but if you remove them (in Slide Sorter view) starting at the beginning, the numbers will automatically adjust, therefore it is recommended that you start from the end and work backwards! Each slide does have a unique number burnt into it to so that you can double check that you have retained the correct ones.
- Create new slides to match the new paragraphs
- Complete any slides that require additional information (e.g. emergency phone numbers or regulators applicable to your site).
- Time the presentation following the changes you have made.

3. Take a look in the Picture Gallery
As every site is different, we cannot include pictures which will exactly illustrate your site, but we have included options for alternative scenes or specialist equipment. You may prefer to use existing photos of your site or take new ones specifically for this training package, which will help to make the presentation specific to your site or organisation.

4. Trainer’s Guide
This includes pointers to make sure everything runs smoothly. There are also some notes on preparation and delivery for anyone who is unfamiliar with running a training session.

5. Toolbox
- Attendance Register
You may already have a system of recording who attends which training courses and when – but if you don’t, this is a simple Excel template which you can either print out or fill in on your PC. It is important that you are able to identify who on site has received the training, who needs further training or who will need to attend a refresher course in the future.
- Certificate
If it is your policy to issue certificates on completion of training, this is a Word template which you can print out – filling in names and dates on the computer or by hand. Or you can customise it to include your company logo and any other relevant information. You may find that it motivates employees to take the course seriously if they want the certificate.

- Pub Quiz
Another way of ensuring people pay attention is to tell them that there will be a short quiz at the end or during the course. By getting the audience involved, they should also become more relaxed and enter into the experience more fully. (Tell them it’s just like a pub quiz – but without the pub!)
There is a short sequence built into Part 1 of the Presentation (slides 1.67 - 1.69) which show some bad storage examples. At this point you can ask the audience to identify as many problems as they can. You can substitute examples from your own site in this section, or you may prefer to build a separate module to use at a different time. There are more bad examples in the picture gallery. There is a short quiz buit in (slides 1.70 - 1.74)
In the Toolbox our ‘pub quiz’ contains these and more questions you can throw at the audience at random at the end of the course (taken from the Spill! video trainer’s notes) – the answers are not included as they are either explicit in the presentation or will be specific to your site. Add your own as appropriate. There are additional questions based on the 11 Steps to Spill Response.
You could issue a written questionnaire based on this document, but the ‘pub quiz’ approach is a less stressful way of testing understanding.

- Exercises
We have included suggestions for either a practical ‘spills’ exercise or an option that you can conduct in the training room if you can’t take the audience out on site (based on the exercises in the Spill! Trainer’s Notes).
- Handouts
15 steps to Pollution Prevention and 11 steps to Spill Response. These are listed on an A4 sheet for ease of printing and distributing. Modify the handout to include any specific important items for your site - particularly phone numbers to contact in the event of emergencies.
They could be laminated to put up around the site as reminders – blown up to form a poster or feel free to relay the information to fit onto postcards or create a pocket sized, double-sided layout to issue as laminated cards.
- Unofficial Pollution Prevention Laws
For those with a cynical sense of humour, you may care to read out these laws or run the separate PowerPoint module for a little light relief. The Bund Observations are presented as bullet points in the PowerPoint. For the full text, open Speaker’s Notes in PowerPoint or use the Word File.

- Useful Links
If you run the CD on a PC with an internet connection or transfer the CD contents onto a hard drive, clicking on the links will take you directly to the site. If you do not have internet access, you can make a note of the site address for future reference.
Your customised package can be kept very simple - or you can make it as sophisticated as you wish. For example:
- Add your company name and logo to an opening slide at the beginning of the PowerPoint
- Add your company logo to each slide
- Use existing photographs or take new ones to insert into the PowerPoint to illustrate key areas of the site or examples appropriate to this training session.

How To . . .
Transfer files to a hard drive: The files on the CD are read-only. To enable you to modify any of the sections, you will need to copy the files to your computer. In Windows Explorer, click on the CD drive, click on the folder of Spillskiller files to drag-and-drop onto your desk top (or preferred destination).
To access the PowerPoint presentations from the Spillskiller main menu screen, click on the PowerPoint icon. This will give you the option to PLAY or EDIT.
If you select play, you will be able to click through all the slides in the pre-set order. (Right click to display as full screen).
Select EDIT when you wish to modify any of the slides.
If you are not familiar with modifying PowerPoint programmes or inserting pictures, there are excellent instructions in PowerPoint if you click on the ? on the tool bar.
There are a number of ways to carry out a wide range of operations, but this is a very simple guide:
Top of page
Change text
Make sure the presentation is in Slide View (select from the drop-down View menu). Highlight the text to be changed and delete or add as in a word processing package
Add a new slide
In Slide View, select new slide from the Insert drop-down menu. From the visual options, choose if the new slide is to be a bulleted list, heading only or suitable to accept a picture. This will be created with the same background as the rest of the slides in the section and will show outline boxes where you can add text.
Change the order
From the View drop down menu, select Slide Sorter View. In this view, you will see thumbnails of all the slides in the presentation. Pass the cursor over the slides until you reach the slide to be moved. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the slide to the preferred position.
Delete a slide
In Slide Sorter View, left click once on the slide to be deleted then either use the ‘scissors’ cut command on the tool bar or hit delete on the keyboard.
Top of page
Copy a slide
In Slide Sorter View, left click on the selected slide, hold down the control key (a small + should appear next to the image) and drag the copy to the required position.
Insert a picture
Create a new, blank slide in the required position. If you know the position in your files of the picture to be inserted, in Slide View open the Insert drop-down menu, move down the menu to Picture, follow the arrow across to choose ‘From file’ and select the folder and file.
Alternatively, open the package you use to view pictures, select and open the picture you wish to insert. Click the copy option on the menu bar, return to the blank slide in PowerPoint and click Paste. This will insert the picture. To make it the full size of the slide, move the cursor over the corner of the image until the diagonal arrow appears, then drag the corners to the required size.
